7 Tips for beginners to write poetry
What is poetry? Putting together three or five beautiful words? Or is it enough to make rhymes between sentences and call it a poem? Of course, it is not appropriate to look for poetry in such shallow meanings. After all, we are talking about a branch of art that defies centuries…
Samuel Taylor Coleridge defines the poem as "A poem is that species of composition which is opposed to the works of science by proposing for its immediate object pleasure, not truth”. But I like the metaphorical definition of poetry more…
To us, a poem is a rhyme that appeals to the imagination and creative visualization, touches people’s heart, evokes memories, emotions, enthusiasm.
Poetry is much more than words. With this definition, we can see the real self of the poem more clearly.

We encounter poetry in every period of our lives, albeit without realizing it, and we learn how poetry is created through an implicit way of learning. Even people who claim that they don't like poetry know some poems by heart.
In fact, WAIT A MINUTE, many people love to sing poems.
We say “sing” because every song composed is, in a way, a poem blended with music. Many artists and bands in our recent past have created their known works by being influenced by poems.
Queens’ lead vocalist Freddie Mercury, for example, wrote the song "Nevermore", inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. “’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door Only this and nothing more.” Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December; And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow, sorrow for the lost Lenore For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore Nameless here for evermore. …. Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer, “Sir,” said I, “or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore; But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping, And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door, That I scarce was sure I heard you”—here I opened wide the door; Darkness there and nothing more. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?” This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!” Merely this and nothing more. Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning, Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before. “Surely,” said I, “surely that is something at my window lattice; Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; ’Tis the wind and nothing more!” … | There's no living in my life anymore The seas have gone dry And the rain's stopped falling Please don't you cry any more Can't you see Listen to the breeze Whisper to me please Don't send me to the path of nevermore Even the valley's below Where the rays of the sun Were so warm and tender Now haven't anything to grow Can't you see? Why did you have to leave me? (nevermore) Why did you deceive me? (nevermore) You sent me to the path of nevermore When you say you didn't love me anymore Ah ah nevermore nevermore |
Can Anyone Write Poetry?
Poetry is not independent of language. Therefore, a person who has an innate language learning mechanism and emotions, meets some conditions for writing poetry without effort. But the quality of the poems written differs from person to person.
Because the fact that everyone has the ability to write poetry does not show that there is no need for a separate talent to write poetry.
On the contrary, writing poetry is also a special talent. Therefore, anyone can write poetry, but not be a poet.
In other words, if some people are better with words than others, it is an indication that they can write better poems. However, if we think of “writing poetry” as a “muscle”, with enough practice, everyone can write good poems over time and can reach the level of expressing themselves with poems.
So, we believe that anyone who sincerely wants to write poetry can write poetry. BUT is there a way to learn whether you have a hidden talent for poetry? As a person who sincerely wants to write poetry, where should you start to write poetry?
The Art of Writing Poetry
The art of writing poetry is a phenomenon that has a very old history and is affected by everything about life and affects everything about life.
Therefore, writing poetry is an art in itself. It cannot be denied that there are some elements to be considered in the art of writing poetry. By paying attention to these points, it can be easier for beginners to create more harmonious and aesthetic poems.
For those who want to reveal their love of poetry, we are sharing these tips with you:
Poetry must find balance in form and style. In other words, the form of the poem and the content of the poem should complement each other.
Repetitions in poetry can weaken the meaning. Therefore, unnecessary repetitions should be avoided.
Poetry means to tell a lot with few words. Unnecessary extensions should therefore be avoided.
Literary arts should definitely be considered in order to strengthen the meaning of poetry and increase its aesthetics.
Poetry does not describe an emotion as it is. We don't need poetry for the feelings that we can say directly anyway.
Words should be given new concepts other than ordinary ones. With this method, which we can also call it as equivocation, the aesthetics of poetry can be enriched. For example, instead of "wind blows leaves", "wind sweeps hopes" can be used.
Poetry does not convey an event or situation as it is. To give an example, it remains simple to convey the event by simply saying that “spring has come” in a poem. When the reader reads the poem, she/he should understand that spring has already come without actually reading it in the sentence. In other words, the poem should contain the reflections of emotions created by the situations.
